Pollen Tube Growth in Incompatible Pistils and Style-grafted Pistils of ‘Satonishiki’ Sweet Cherry

چکیده

Prunus fruit trees of the Rosaceae family exhibit S-RNase-based gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI), which enables pistils to reject self-pollen by suppressing pollen tube elongation. In other plant species with GSI, it has been shown that this suppression consists two steps: first, slowing down elongation in middle part style and second, complete arrest involving programmed cell death. To characterize pattern incompatible tubes Prunus, we observed ‘Satonishiki’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium) ‘Rainier’ on agar plates growth cut branches. Incompatible selfed delayed penetration into stigma both experiments. Observation was difficult 24 h after pollination (HAP) due wilting styles, while observing them branches possible up 72 HAP. branches, barely elongated self from 32 48 HAP when compatible reached base a style, but resumed style. An RNase activity staining indicated S-RNase inactive Finally, style-grafted accelerated upper one-third self-pollinated styles grafted onto ‘Taishonishiki’ pistils. These results P. avium consistently reversible. We discuss mechanism possibility artificial control self-incompatibility.

Effects of exogenous materials on pollen tube growth in Lilium longiflorum pistils.

With the use of stigmatic exudate or distilled water as carriers, various antimetabolites, inhibitors, and miscellaneous materials were injected into the hollow styles of detached Lilium longiflorum pistils before, at, or after compatible or incompatible pollination. Pollen tube lengths were measured 48 hr after pollination with pollinated styles incubated at 22-23 degrees C. Substances conside...

Arti®cial shading reduces the occurrence of double pistils in `Satohnishiki' sweet cherry

The effect of arti®cial shading in summer and early autumn on the occurrence of double pistils in `Satohnishiki' sweet cherry was studied. Potted trees were grown in steel frame structures covered with woven shade cloth made of silvered polyethylene and providing 53% and 78% light reduction, from 23rd July to 4th October in 1995 and from 16th July to 16th September in 1997. In 1995, shading lev...

Incorporation of label into pollen tube walls from myoinositol-labeled Lilium longiflorum pistils.

Compatible and incompatible pollen tubes growing on detached Lilium longiflorum pistils which had been prelabeled with myoinositol-U-(14)C take up a portion of the label and utilize it for biosynthesis of tube wall substance. The label is transferred from pistil to pollen tubes apparently via the secretion products (exudate) of the pistil. The exudate thus appears to have a major nutritional ro...

Pathfinding in angiosperm reproduction: pollen tube guidance by pistils ensures successful double fertilization.

Sexual reproduction in flowering plants is unique in multiple ways. Distinct multicellular gametophytes contain either a pair of immotile, haploid male gametes (sperm cells) or a pair of female gametes (haploid egg cell and homodiploid central cell). After pollination, the pollen tube, a cellular extension of the male gametophyte, transports both male gametes at its growing tip and delivers the...

Effect of temperature on pollen tube kinetics and dynamics in sweet cherry, Prunus avium (Rosaceae).

Prevailing ambient temperature during the reproductive phase is one of several important factors for seed and fruit set in different plant species, and its consequences on reproductive success may increase with global warming. The effect of temperature on pollen performance was evaluated in sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), comparing as pollen donors two cultivars that differ in their adaptation ...
